Helen Ashley is a local artist, designer and maker. When she is not designing textiles or illustrating, she likes to play with clay, which she finds very calming.
Helen trained as a textile designer in the UK, studying fashion and art history. Her Sydney art studio is called The Art Room. Located in an old industrial paint factory, Precinct 75, Helen manages and shares this space with 25 other creative characters. Here, she loves to explore and play with different textures, colours and patterns.
“I have handmade quirky things by pushing natural found objects like feathers and sea shells directly into clay or making my own moulds from fruit and vegetables,” says Helen. “I like to work in porcelain as I love its pale, delicate and often temperamental characteristics.”
Her dog and cat sugar shovels are particularly popular, each one created totally individually with love and a great sense of humour.
