IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:
Convict William Long arrived in the Baring in 1815.
A whitesmith, working with tin and other metals, Long became the publican of the Commercial Tavern in George Street and by 1835 was described as a prosperous wine and spirit merchant.
He owned much land in The Rocks, and is commemorated by the early street Long's Lane.
Long built the mansion Tusculum in Potts Point in 1835 which still survives.
