Jim and Anita Martin have been designing and crafting handmade bespoke jewellery pieces for over 25 years. They first learned the technique from relatives and have proudly carried on the tradition.
Their beautiful pieces begin as a humble piece of copper wire, which is then bent, twisted, hammered, shaped and formed into neckbands, armbands, bangles and rings. Some pieces are paired with semi-precious gemstones or Swarovski crystals to produce a striking and unique bracelet or ring. All of their wirework designs are 100% Australian created and crafted.
For a quarter of a century, the couple have been selling their handmade wire work jewellery up and down the east coast of Australia, doing country markets, craft fairs and street fairs. They feel blessed to call The Rocks Markets their home since moving back to Sydney.
“We have well-informed, discerning consumers who have the world of shopping at their fingertips with online retailers. This is why venues such as The Rocks Markets are so important, because whilst these consumers enjoy the convenience of online shopping, they are also looking for a distinctive, engaging shopping experience that gives them a memorable social outing,” says Anita.
“The Rocks Markets and its environs are so unique. It is such a beautiful and historic venue. That, coupled with the array of products available, has the ability to stir the individual’s imagination by embracing the creativity and authenticity of the markets, with many original, eclectic and bohemian products available.”
Anita feels their works fall under the ‘bohemian’ category, with whimsical pieces of functional art and fashion accessories. They can be customized to accommodate all specific size requirements, from petite to fuller figure, male and female. Some products, namely the copper bracelets, often used by arthritis sufferers, can be made to measure and created in the time it takes to enjoy a cup of coffee whilst soaking up the ambience of The Rocks.
At the markets, visitors can not only watch Anita and Jim at work, but also chat to them about their creative process and the history and heritage of The Rocks.
“From our own travels we know that these conversations can be some of the most memorable and talked about once back home,” says Anita. “Just like no two handmade designs are exactly the same, no two visits to see our artisan’s creations are identical.
