IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:
Naval Office established in 1801.
The Naval Officer was responsible for the coming and going of ships in the Harbour and was the forerunner of the Customs Office.
The Office was based initially in house that stood at 100 George Street, erected by Thomas Moore who was in charge of the dockyard.
In 1827 the office moved to the original section of what is now the Argyle Stores in Argyle Street....
