IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:
Bank of Australia opens in George Street in 1826 between Essex and Globe Streets. This was the second bank established in the colony, the first being the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac) in 1817. The Bank of Australia never fully recovered from a robbery in 1828, and finally collapsed during the Depression in the early 1840s.
