Guide to Halloween in The Rocks: Sydney’s spookiest precinct

The Rocks is one of Australia’s oldest European settlements, boasting a haunted history that would send shivers down any spine. With Halloween lurking just around the corner, is there anywhere better to be?

To help you explore the dark laneways and historic hideaways, we’ve put together a guide to the best events and deals in The Rocks this Halloween.

Things to do

The Argyle is putting on a weeklong Halloween spooktacular, spanning Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October. On Wednesday catch a scary movie under the stars for free, or go on Thursday to be a part of the MJ Thriller Experience. Then on Friday and Saturday night commit yourself to the Argyle Asylum, where costumes are a must and a frighteningly good time is guaranteed.

Or for a supernatural experience visit The Argyle Oracle, Sydney’s oldest and most mystical psychic centre. Tell your future with tarot card readings and psychic readings, or contact the other side with mediumship and spiritual healing.

The Russell Hotel in The Rocks is known for its charming rooftop garden and central location, but what many don’t know is that it’s also one of the most haunted hotels in the world. Stay a night and meet the hotel’s most infamous ghost, an unnamed sailor who was murdered by a sex worker. His spirit is said to linger in room number eight where he met his end, appearing only to women sleeping on their own.

Eat and drink

If you fancy a Halloween themed treat, you’ve come to the right place. The Tea Cosy are serving up delicious pumpkin scones, perfect for comfort eating after a fright. Down the road, The Orient is whipping up a wicked Halloween pumpkin cheesecake, complete with mini tombstone decorations.

Starbucks are pouring a frightfully delicious pumpkin spiced latte, and the Sticky are crafting premium Halloween themed hard candy just for the occasion. If you want to make a night of it, El Camino Cantina is hosting a Day of the Dead Fiesta including one-off themed cocktails, dastardly decorations and wings so spicy they’ll melt your face off.

The Rocks Market

The Rocks Markets are embracing Halloween, with local artisan stallholders turning out delicious themed treats. Don’t miss the Halloween themed, handcrafted fudge from The Village Providore and make sure you try their creme brulee flavour while you’re there.

For something even more decadent, sample the alcoholic chocolate cocktails in ‘deadly flavours’ from the Emporium of Chocolate. Or try a classic, remixed for Halloween - Tokyo Lamington's Halloween special with whipped pumpkin cream and black charcoal sponge dipped in white chocolate and coconut.

If you're bringing the kids out, make sure to join the free slime workshop and get Halloween face painting done too.

Halloween shopping

Don't have a sweet tooth? Why not get into the Halloween spirit with a little shopping instead. Get Drenched has all the candles you need to bring those spooky Halloween vibes home, with scents like chocolate orange, lemon drop and cinnamon. Or drop in to DUX Collection for selling candles inspired by sweet treats like vanilla caramel and coconut lime.
