Husband and wife Jane Tyron and Mourad Nafti share a passion for textiles from Tunisia in Northern Africa. Combining Jane’s love of design with Mourad’s commitment to fair trade and traditional arts, they formed Focal Point Home to import traditional Egyptian cotton towels, known as Foutas, to Australia and elsewhere.
With a 20-year background in interior design and retail, Jane designs two ranges a year focusing on colour trend forecasting. Meanwhile, Mourad travels extensively as the buyer and intermediary with the Tunisian artisans. He has established close personal friendships with suppliers, ensuring that they can continue their craft by finding new markets for them globally.
Fouta is the Arabic word for tissue and these colourful striped towels are traditionally offered at Tunisian bathhouses. The large, lightweight towels are perfect for a day at the beach. They roll up tightly, ideal for a tote, and are more absorbent and dry faster than terry cloth towels. Each towel is luxuriously large and becomes even softer and more absorbent the more they are used. Focal Point Home’s Fouta towels come in a variety of colours, each woven from 100% Egyptian cotton and finished with a hand-knotted fringe.
Traditionally stocked only in specialist retail outlets, these Egyptian cotton, multi-tasking textiles are now available at The Rocks Market. Find more of Focal Point Home’s collection on their website, Facebook and Instagram.
