Catherine McQuade and Amanda Owens are rebels by nature. They met in the heady 80s when Cathy's band 'Deckchairs Overboard' played at Amanda's nightclub 'Stranded' in the centre of Sydney. They became instant best friends and formed a girl power alliance, in what was then, a largely male-dominated industry. It was only many years later that they discovered they were both born in the same remote part of North Wales.
Years later they put their minds to creating a fashion label that was designed for women, not girls, and which would reach out to the plus-size market without the stigma or the general lack of imagination that is broadly available.
Smooth was an instant success and over the years they have expanded their design reach to take charge of many of the fabric designs as well.
One of the features of Smooth is that they style customers. It is a service as much as a product.
Their range is for women over 35, who like natural fibres. The focus is on luxury fabrics, vibrant colors and incredibly flattering styles. Starting at an Australian size 12, Smooth designs both casual and special event pieces.
Clients include many high-profile women in politics, the law and the arts; Smooth has dressed Helen Reddy, Toni Lamond, Magda Subanzski, Angela Catterns to name just a few.
