The National: Australian Art Now is a major biennial survey exhibition of contemporary Australian art.

Presenting the latest ideas and forms in contemporary Australian art across four of Sydney’s premier cultural institutions: the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Carriageworks, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the exhibition represents a mix of emerging, mid-career and established Australian artists living here and beyond. New and commissioned works encompass a diverse range of mediums including painting, video, sculpture, installation, drawing and performance. The National: Australian Art Now is the only large-scale recurring exhibition in the city focused solely on contemporary Australian art.

Featuring new commissions and recent works by an intergenerational and culturally diverse group of artists and collectives, The National 4: Australian Art Now reflects how artists are responding to some of the most urgent and critical ideas of our times, imagining new ways of seeing and being in the world at a time of unprecedented change. Reflecting the latest evolutions in contemporary art, the exhibition includes works in diverse media including painting, photography, film, video, sculpture, installation, drawing, sound and performance, encompassing a range of experimental, process-based and socially engaged practices.

The 2023 edition is curated by Beatrice Gralton at the Art Gallery of New South Wales; Emily Rolfe at Campbelltown Arts Centre; Freja Carmichael and Aarna Fitzgerald Hanley at Carriageworks; and Jane Devery at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
