Back by popular demand! Jazz Sessions is bringing its unique magic for an extended stay from April to September. Prepare for a Thursday evening filled with soulful melodies, delectable cocktails and unforgettable ambiance.

Each week, homegrown talent from the cool and creative world of Australian jazz will take the stage under twinkling lights and captivate you on a sonic adventure. This new program is curated by SIMA, who are passionate about presenting the most unique, exciting and diverse jazz. 

Mingle with your mates, catch up after work or make new friends as you connect over refreshing cocktails from Hickson House.

Jazz Sessions is free to attend, so you can unwind and enjoy the music each week without breaking the bank. It’s the perfect after work activity, pre or post dinner treat. We will go ahead rain or shine. Join us outdoors under the stars at The Rocks Square, or just a 2 minute walk away at 6-8 Atherden St in the event of wet weather. 


Program:

  • 6pm: Jazz Sessions Opens - Come in and take a seat 

  • 6.30pm - 7.15pm: First set 

  • 7:15pm - 7:30pm: Break

  • 7.30pm - 8.15pm: Second set 

  • 8.30pm: Jazz Sessions closes

Magdalena Mira Trio feat. Jonathan Zwartz on double bass 

Chilean-born vocalist Magdalena Mira brings a rare blend of warmth, depth, and elegance to the stage. She weaves a rich tapestry of sound that draws from the soulful traditions of Latin America, jazz, and beyond.

Magdalena is joined by two of Australia’s finest: guitarist Ben Hauptmann and percussionist Ben Kidson. Together, they create a dynamic interplay of rhythm and harmony, blending modern textures with traditional roots. For this special performance, the trio expands into a quartet with the addition of the extraordinary Jonathan Zwartz on double bass—adding depth, gravitas, and a touch of magic to the ensemble.

Golden Strangers
The Golden Strangers bring their cinematic jazz-noir sound to Jazz Sessions in The Rocks, led by acclaimed guitarist and composer Julian Curwin (The Tango Saloon, Cannibal Spiders). Blending elements of spaghetti western, lounge, and vintage jazz, their music evokes a Tarantino film scored by Bowie and Morricone. Featuring Ollie Thorpe (pedal steel, vocals), Brendan Clark (bass), and Jamie Cameron (drums), the band released their debut album on Romero Records in June 2023.
