1. Wander around historic laneways

Did you know The Rocks is one of the oldest European settlements in Australia? You can see signs of that fascinating history everywhere in the precinct. Foundation Park is a must-see - this little known gem was once the site of eight townhouses built in the 1870s - their tiny 3x3 metre rooms give an insight into what life was like centuries ago in The Rocks.

2. Visit The Rocks Markets

If you haven’t been to The Rocks Markets, you haven’t experienced the real Sydney. This weekly market is the ‘home of originality’ featuring stalls by local creatives and small businesses, live music, workshops, and plenty of good vibes.

3. Catch a free outdoor film at Laneway Cinemas

Free outdoor cinema at Laneway Cinemas has got to be one of the best free things to do in Sydney. You can’t beat its cobbled laneway setting, cosy bean bags and a lineup of the best classic films and new hits - perfect for viewing under the stars.

4. Get flexy at Yoga in The Park

Yoga classes can cost an absolute fortune! But not in The Rocks. Look out for free Yoga in The Park every Sunday morning with a stunning view of The Harbour Bridge from Dawes Point Park.

5. Understand Aboriginal history at The Rocks Discovery Museum

Housed in three buildings that date almost two centuries back to 1844, The Rocks Discovery Museum is a treasure trove of fascinating history. Inside you’ll find exhibitions that tell the fascinating tales of life for First Nations people before, during and after European colonisation.

6. Enjoy free live music by local singer songwriters

Fancy catching some live music but don’t want to pay a fortune for tickets? The Rocks has the busiest busking scene in Sydney, with regular performers. The Rocks Markets often host musicians and there are several pubs and restaurants who regularly put on shows.

7. Enjoy a picnic under the bridge

If you need a little sunshine and fresh air in central Sydney grab some takeaway, roll up your picnic blanket and get to Dawes Point Park. This grassy lawn underneath the Harbour Bridge has stunning sea views, plenty of shade and is completely pet friendly!

8. Tour Sydney’s best art galleries including the MCA

Entry to the Museum of Contemporary Art, one of Australia’s best art museums, is completely free. Inside you’ll find rotating exhibitions of local and international artists and Aboriginal art featured prominently. Once you’ve seen it all, why not make a day of it and visit one of many local galleries and artsy hotspots.

9. Explore haunted buildings

The Rocks is an old place, home to thousands of years of history. Due to its long history and colourful past there’s been a few grisly events over the years - which of course means there are several haunted buildings. Explore them all and learn their dark stories.

10. Get your daily dose of fresh air at a harbourside park

The Rocks may be minutes from the heart of central Sydney but it’s home to five beautiful public parks, most of which are complete with views of the harbour, the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Check them out here.
